Introducing Thoughts on Social Media

by Jay Thompson on September 26, 2009

Yeah, this is just what the blogiverse needs, another blog on Social Media. Like there aren’t enough of those out there already…

So why Jay, why clog up the interwebs with yet another site dedicated to social media?

Two reasons:

1) Social media intrigues me. Blame it on years spent in Human Resources in Corporate America. I’ve always been fascinated by the human need for social interaction. People ask me what my hobbies are and I usually say “Poker and people watching”. Both are intertwined. Poker is just a way to have fun (and make money) while people watching.  I also have an odd addiction to mindless reality TV shows — again it boils down to observing how humans interact. Don’t ask me why human interaction fascinates me, it just does.  And let’s face it, “social media” is, in its purest form, human interaction.

2) I like to write about social media-like topics, and I needed an outlet. My “regular blog” is a real estate blog. Occasionally I’ll write something there about social media, but that tends to annoy the primary audience of that blog and it’s that primary audience that pays the bills (since I’ve not mastered the game of poker well enough to make a living playing. Yet.)

I also need a blog sandbox to play in. A place to try new themes, new plugins, new scripts, etc. A place that should I happen to break it doinking around under the hood, it’s far less likely to cause me to stay up late swearing and panicking.

Hence the… need… for Thoughts on Social Media.

Thanks Bob. I have no idea what will come of this. But at least now I have a place to write my thoughts about a subject that fascinates me without clogging up the main business blog….

Great idea! It answers the question about separating content on your main TPREG blog! And you won’t have to worry about offending people since most who read this will also be seeing you on Twitter etc.! Good Luck!

Jay, glad to see a arena where you can play outside our real estate industry, will you be adding Disqus for your comments? Got you on RSS so I am expecting big stuff!

Hey, Jay! Delighted to see you “weighing in” on this topic which consumes much of our time & thought.

Looking forward to seeing what you think of.

Jay,

Great to see this new site. You were one of the first to tell me to start the Lab and keep the RE blog separate.

Can’t wait to see where this venture goes in the next couple years.

Jay – I don’t think anyone could doubt that this will be an interesting project. I like the idea of splitting things up for you, as you RE blog is so well respected and read that I can imagine that some of the SM stuff might bore the users you need most on your site.

I look forward to seeing where you take it and wish you the best of luck for it.

Awesome Jay! I’m looking forward to the thoughts and interactions this will bring. Social media has introduced a whole new dimension to my world and what a fun sandbox it is to play in!
